Do you experiences conflicts at work that impact your productivity and/or well-being?

Mediation can help!

Two hands shaking, people in background

As a qualified mediator, I offer the setting to help you resolve the conflicts and be able to focus on the content of your work and on the science again!

Examples for mediation topics in the academic setting:

  • Scientific disagreements have made collaborations difficult
  • Sharing equipment and resources
  • Authorship conflicts
  • Difficult supervisor-supervisee relationships
  • Tension in the team

Why mediation?

Academia is a highly competitive field and as a scientist, you are constantly encouraged to defend your ideas, sell yourself and support your claims with data and evidence. Let's not forget that scientists are also just humans with different backgrounds, opinions and expectations. When humans work together, conflicts are bound to happen. Conflicts can absorb a lot of mental resources. This affects productivity and can even bring entire research projects to a halt. Of course, conflicts can also affect how well you feel at work.

Mediation creates room for approaching conflicts in a structured manner and in a respectful setting. Actively engaging with a conflict can prevent it from dragging on and therefore help the science and individual careers. Additionally, having undergone the experience of mediation can lead to sustainable improvements in communication and productivity of a team and the well-being of everyone involved.

What to expect

Mediation is a structured process that can help you tackle your conflict.

Mediation therefore relies on the voluntary participation of everyone involved. I will provide the setting as an impartial party. In addition to moderating the conversation, I will also facilitate conflict resolution by actively guiding through all stages of the process.

During mediation, each person has the opportunity to explain their point of view. Together, we will identify topics that underpin the conflict at hand. Each topic will be discussed in more depth. The aim is to find a solution that is attractive to everyone.

My mediation philosophy is that during the entire process, you are and remain the expert of your conflict and circumstances. I will therefore not offer solutions to your conflict, but instead help you to better understand what factors underlie your conflict. My long term experience in the academic setting allows me to ask helpful questions and to structure the situation at hand.

When is mediation not the right tool?

Mediation is not the right tool if not all involved parties are willing to take part (then conflict consulting as part of individual coaching can help).

If there is no concrete conflict at hand, but instead, you are looking to improve efficiency and communication in your team in general (then team coaching or training can help, feel free to contact me to find out more).

What next?
