Are you struggling with academic life?

Do you want to boost your productivity?

Coaching can help!

I offer 1:1 confidential coaching sessions so that you can tackle your specific situation in a systematic and supportive environment. I combine my qualifications in systemic coaching with my experience and expertise in the academic world. In these coaching sessions, I create room for topics that usually do not get enough attention in the academic setting.

Common coaching topics include

Manage
yourself!

  • You feel that you’re too busy and stressed to take care of yourself?
  • Work-related topics are always on your mind, even on weekends and during holidays?
  • You tend to procrastinate certain aspects of your work?
  • You work a lot, but the output does not seem to reflect this?
  • You have lost motivation and love for your research?

Plan your career!

  • You have doubts whether academia is the right place for you?
  • You are sure you want to have an academic career, but you don’t know how to go about it?
  • You are facing an important career decision and are hoping to get outside perspective?

Work well with other people!

  • You feel like you’re not getting enough support from your PI or colleagues to do your work or to proceed in your career?
  • You want to improve relationships with certain colleagues?
  • You suddenly have to manage people, but have never learned how to do so?

 Present with self-confidence!

  • You are nervous and stressed before giving presentations?
  • You feel like your voice is often not heard or your ideas do not get as much attention as you would like?
  • You need to prepare for an important talk or interview and want to attend with as much self-confidence as possible?

Why coaching?

If you want to maximise your productivity or are struggling with aspects of academic life, you are definitely not alone. While everyone I met during my academic career has started off highly motivated and passionate, day-to-day life and longer term career planning of scientists can be far from easy. Feeling overwhelmed, stressed and insecure are a common result. While universities and research institutes might offer soft-skill workshops and information weeks on mental health, there is usually not much individual support to look at your own particular goals, challenges and circumstances. Coaching offers exactly that!

What to expect

We will have confidential meetings that are focused on your specific situation. The aim is for you to gain insights and new perspectives on your goals and challenges, and on your personal strengths and resources that will help you to master them.

In the beginning of the coaching process, we will work out and precisely formulate your goals for the coaching. This is a bit like planning a research project and its specific aims and hypotheses.

The job of a scientist is to solve complex scientific problems by breaking a large project into smaller chunks. The systemic coaching approach I use relies on the same principles. In my coaching philosophy, you are the expert on your life and circumstances. My role is to help you structure your situation and reflect on it. I do this by asking questions that you have not asked yourself before and help you identify beliefs and assumptions that you may not be aware of. Sometimes I will also provide various tools or exercises.

We will investigate what may be the underlying factors that facilitate and maintain a challenging situation, and we will identify the factors that you have control over.  I will help you to develop strategies for reaching your goals and for how you can live the academic life in a relaxed, content and self-effective way.

When is coaching not the right tool?

Coaching is not the right tool if you are looking for a quick fix. I am a STEM scientist and I do not (claim to) have supernatural powers or miraculous machines.

Coaching is also not the right tool if you are looking for somebody to give you step-by-step instructions. The idea of coaching is that I support you in coming up with your own instructions, which takes time and proactivity.

Coaching is also not the right tool if you are looking to develop or improve specific skills (in that case, I recommend looking at Training options).

Coaching is not psychotherapy. If you think you may have a mental health issue that requires therapeutic intervention, coaching cannot replace that.

Clients' voices

“With Ilona’s guidance, I have learned to improve my self-confidence, assert my ideas confidently, and effectively navigate workplace conflicts. In summary, Ilona is a truly exceptional coach who has had a very positive impact on my personal and professional development. I wholeheartedly recommend her services”

"I found discussions with Ilona helpful in evaluating my emotional responses to work-related issues and conflicts. Our discussions regarding communication and relationship building as a two way responsibility was particularly essential for me because it helped me deal with the stress of difficult professional situations. Various topics such as dealing with imposter syndrome, passive aggressiveness etc. came up during our talks and I found Ilona's questions- directed towards unraveling the underlying cause of these issues- quite helpful. I would recommend PhD students to engage in conversation with her to help them get a fresh perspective on dealing with stress and conflict during their PhD."

“Ilona has been my mentor at a critical time when I was about to embark on my first postdoctoral position, and when I was contemplating various career options. Ilona helped me define my research interests and chart a path toward becoming an independent researcher. Of great value for me was that she also encouraged me to reflect on my academic and personal values, priorities, and boundaries. Ilona was a very good listener to me whilst at the same time offering practical suggestions and useful strategies that I had not considered. I am really grateful for the insights and support she provided during our mentorship journey, and I strongly recommend her to anyone seeking guidance and support in their academic and professional life."

"I found it a great challenge to decide how I wanted to continue my career after my doctorate. As a mentor, Ilona helped me incredibly to stay calm here, to reflect on what I wanted to do, and to develop an individual path what to pursue after my doctorate. From our meetings, I was able to take a lot from her experience in the transition from the doctorate to next career positions. Now that my PhD is coming to an end, there is still some degree of uncertainty, but I think I have developed a very positive attitude towards it."

"I've been meeting with Ilona for about five years. During that time, she has supported me to obtain COVID-related relief, and critiqued many iterations of research proposals, culminating in successful British Academy postdoctoral fellowship application this year. Her mentorship has been instrumental in navigating the challenges of building a sustainable career while relocating internationally, completing my PhD, and seeking employment opportunities. Ilona's approach is receptive and respectful. I appreciate how she listens, shares her experience, and prompts me to reflect on what I am trying to achieve. I enthusiastically recommend her practical wisdom to anyone starting or re-thinking their professional journey."

"Working with my coach was a transformative experience that significantly boosted my confidence and preparedness for my fellowship interviews. She expertly guided me in preparing my presentation slides that effectively communicated my research ideas, ensuring I highlighted the most critical aspects. Additionally, her empathetic listening and support were invaluable in addressing my anxieties and overcoming my impostor syndrome. Her holistic approach was instrumental in my success, and I am deeply grateful for her guidance."
